Usuki Castle (Bungo Province/Oita Prefecture)
Usuki-jo was built in the 5th year of Eiroku era (1562) by Sourin Ohtomo. Sourin made it his base, and it was an international city that welcomes ships from countries such as Portugal at the port in the castle town and was visited by merchants and propagators. After the Ohtomo clan came Naotaka Fukuhara and Kazuyoshi Ohta, who became rulers of the city, and after Sekigahara war came Sadamichi Inaba. The Inaba clan ruled the castle throughout the Edo period until the Meiji restoration. The castle is build on Nyuu-jima island, afloat in the gulf of Usuki and boasted a firm defense due to its floating nature. The circumference is now filled.
