Kasugayama Castle

Kasugayama Castle
(Echigo Province/Niigata Prefecture)

A castle built to defend the Echigo government. During the 4th year of Eisho era (1507), the deputy governor of Echigo, Tamekage Nagao, held the actual ruling power of Echigo, and occupied the castle as his own base. After that, his son Harukage and Kenshin Uesugi, as well as Kenshin's adopted son, Kagekatsu, used the castle as their own bases.
In the 3rd year of Keicho era (1598) Uesugi clan was relocated to Aizu, and Hideharu Hori was switched in to take over. After Hideharu's death, his son Tadatoshi succeeded him. The Hori clan built the Echizen Fukushima-jo on flat land, and moved in in the 12th year of Keicho era (1607), abandoning the Kasugayama-jo.
The castle is located north west of Kubiki plain, and situated at a spot essential to defending the roads of Hokuriku region. The summit is the castle, with housing built at the foot of the mountain, and surrounded by an outer canal.
