Takada Castle (Echigo Province/Niigata Prefecture)
Takada-jo was built in the 19th year of Keicho era (1614) by Tadateru Matsudaira, the sixth son of Ieyasu Tokugawa, who ruled Echigo Province. Tadateru used to base on Echigo-Fukushima-jo built by the Hori clan and moved to the Takada-jo he newly built. It is said Tadateru was transfered to Echigo to prepare for the Maeda clan in Kaga Province, and Takada-jo played the main role for such preparation. Masamune Date, Tadateru's father-in-law, took the charge of the construction when the castle was built. Moreover, the construction was carried out by calling out all daimyos in the east Japan and it is said it took only four months to finish. The castle is located on the flat ground and arranged Seki river as its moat. Dry stone is not used and the castle is formed only with earthwork fortification. A castle tower was not built either, but a triple-layered turret (Osangai) used to stand there as its symbol.
