Matsuyama Castle (Iyo Province/Ehime Prefecture)
Matsuyama-jo was built by Yoshiakira Kato, the lord of Iyo Matsumae, who received a reward for his distinguished services in the Battle of Sekigahara. The construction started in the 7th year of Keicho era (1602) and Yoshiakira moved his residence to Matsuyama from Matsumae in the next year. A typical mountain castle built on a mountain in the flat ground with its Honmaru arranged on a mountain top and Ninomaru and Sannomaru at its foot. The original castle tower had five layers, but was modified to triple-layered later. Although some of them were lost druing the war and fire, they were restored and many architectures including the castle tower remain today. The Kato clan was transfered to Aizu in the 4th year of Kan'ei (1627) and the Gamo clan took over the post. The construction of Matsuyama-jo was finished in the Gamo clan's time. After the Gamo clan, the Matsudaira clan came and held the post by the Meiji Restoration.
