Uwajima Castle (Iyo Province/Ehime Prefecture)
Uwajima-jo's roots begin in the 15th year of Tensho era (1546), when it was first built as Itajima Marugushi castle by Kenmotsu Iefuji. Nobuhisa Saionji ruled it in the 3rd year of Tensho era (1575) but subsequently lost it to Hideyoshi Toyotomi after the Shikoku conquest, leading to the Kobayakawa clan ruling it, and Toda clan ruling it thereafter. In the 4th year of Bunroku era (1595) Takatora Todo was bound by Uwagun, expanding the castle and preparing it as a base. In the 19th year of Keicho era (1614) the Sendai feudal lord Masamune Date's eldest son, Munehide, became the lord of Uwajima. The castle was renamed Uwajima-jo and ruled by the Date clan until the late Tokugawa period and into the Meiji restoration.
