Yuzuki Castle

Yuzuki Castle
(Iyo Province/Ehime Prefecture)

Yuzuki-jo was a stronghold of Kohno clan, a Sengoku daimyo in Iyonokuni. Kohno is a prominent clan in Iyo Province who distinguished themselves in the Genpei War during 1180 and 1185. It is said the castle was built sometime in the first half of 14th centry by Michimori Kohno who moved his base to Yuzuki-jo from Kohno town in Kazahaya district.
Hideyoshi Toyotomi set out for Shikoku conquest in the 13th year of Tensho (1585) and Takakage Kobayakawa, the retailner of Mohri clan, who joined Hideyoshi's conquest, invaded the castle. Michinao Kohno, the master of the clan, surrendered and Kohno clan's rule over Iyonokuni terminated and Yuzuki-jo was abandoned soon after that.
The castle is located on a hill and surrounded by double moats. It is currenly arranged as a park and samurai residences are restored there.
