Takasaki Castle

Takasaki Castle
(Kouzuke Province/Gunma Prefecture)

It is said the origin of Takasaki-jo was Wada-jo built by the Wada clan in the Kamakura period.
The Wada clan used to be the retainer of the Yamanouchi Uesugi clan, but they once prevented invasion by Shingen Takeda after Norimasa Uesugi, the master of the Yamanouchi Uesugi clan, escaped to Echigo Province, but surrendered in due time and became the retainer of the Takeda clan. They belonged to the Hojo clan when the Takeda clan was ruined and they also faded away as the Hojo clan fell into ruin.
In the 3rd year of Keicho era (1589), Naomasa Ii moved his residence castle from Minowa-jo to this castle (Wada-jo) and changed its name to Takasaki-jo. The castle changed its ruler very often during the Edo period and finally became the residence castle for ten generations of the Okouchi clan until it was abandoned by the Meiji Restoration.
