Shirakawa Komine Castle (Mutsu(Iwaki) Province/Fukushima Prefecture)
Shirakawa-jo is also called Komine-jo and it is said that the origin of the castle came from Chikatomo Yuki during Koukoku era (1340-1346). It became the residence castle for the Komine clan of the Shirakawa Yuki family after that and turned into a stronghold of the Shirakawa Yuki clan during the Eisho era (1504-1520). The Shirakawa Yuki clan was dismissed from its post by Hideyoshi's administrative restructuring in Oshu region (Oshu Shioki) and the castle was ruled by the Gamo clan and then the Uesugi clan after that. Nagashige Niwa who was assigned to Shirakawa in the 4th year of Kan'ei era (1627) modified the castle in the form that remains today. The castle played a very important role as a castle located at the boundary between the Kanto and the Oshu regions, but was burnt down when it was attacked by the Meiji govenment forces at the time of the Boshin War. This is a castle with dry stone, which is rarely seen in the east Japan. Its triple-layered turret and the Mae Gomon (front gate) were restored precisely based on the historical materials respectively in 1991 and 1994.
