Nihonmatsu Castle (Mutsu(Iwashiro) Province/Fukushima Prefecture)
Also called Kasumiga-jo. Although there are several opinions about the origin of the castle, it is said the castle was built by Mitsuyasu Hatakeyama, the governer of Oshu region (Oshu Tandai) and served as the residence castle of the Hatakeyama clan for many generations. The Hatakeyama clan was ruined by the Date clan in the 14th year of Tensho era (1586) and the Gamo, Uesugi, Matsushita and then Kato clans became the castle ruler after that. The Kato clan built the dry stone and the castle formed the current shape. In the 20th year of Kan'ei era (1643), Mitsushige Niwa was assigned and Nihonmatsu Han was established. The Niwa clan maintained the post until late Tokugawa shogunate and the castle was conquered during the Boshin War and abandoned.
