Shiroishi Castle (Mutsu(Iwashiro) Province/Miyagi Prefecture)
It is said Shiraishi-jo was built by Tsunemoto Karita. The castle was ruled by the Karita clan for about 100 years and after that by the Shiraishi clan for approximately 400 years. In the late Sengoku period, the Shiraishi clan was put under the control of the Date clan, the conqueror of the Oshu region. In the 19th year of Tensho era (1591), Shiraishi-jo was confiscated from the Date clan and placed under the control of Ujisato Gamo in Aizu Province by Hideyoshi's administrative restructuring in the Oshu region (Oshu Shioki). Ujisato assigned his chief retainer, Satonari Gamo, to the castle as the ruler. In the 3rd year of Keicho era (1598), the Uesugi clan replaced the Gamo clan and assigned their retainer, Kiyonaga Amakasu, to this castle as the ruler. As the Uesugi clan's territory was decreased after the Battle of Sekigahara, Akimitsu Ishikawa and then Kagetsuna Katakura became the castle rulers to prepare for the threat from the south. Shiraishi-jo remained as a branch castle of Sendai-jo and was not destroyed even after the "one castle per country" ordinance was issued. The Katakura clan kept the post of the ruler of Shiraishi-jo until the late Tokugawa shogunate. The Northern Alliance of 31 hans in Oh'u, Ushu and Echigo regions (Ouetsu Reppan Domei) was concluded in this castle at the time of the Meiji Restoration.
