Hagi Castle

Hagi Castle
(Nagato Province/Yamaguchi Prefecture)

Hagi-jo was built by the Mohri clan as their new residence castle as they lost in the Battle of Sekigahara and their previous residence castle, Hiroshima-jo, was confiscated. The construction started in the 9th year of Keicho era (1604) and finished in the 13th year of Keicho (1608).
The castle consists of a castle on the flat groung of the delta lcoated at the mouth of Abu river and a mountain castle on the Mt.Shizuki with the altitude of 143m which looks like it sticks out towards the sea. The former one had Sannomaru, Ninomaru and Honmaru and the latter one had five layer castle tower as well as Ninomaru and Honmaru.
In the final years of the Edo period, the han's administration office was moved to Yamaguchi, which was more convenient for access from Hagi. Architectures of Hagi-jo no longer exist, but it is now arranged as a park and the dry stone remains today.
The significant feaure of Hagi is that the atmosphere of the castle town those days remains today and valuable architectures still exist.
