Azuchi Castle

Azuchi Castle
(Oumi Province/Shiga Prefecture)

The Azuchi-jo was built by Nobunaga Oda and the construction started in the 4th year of Tensho era (1576) and was supervised by Nagahide Niwa. The castle tower was finished in the 7th year of Tensho era (1579), and Nobunaga moved to this castle from Gifu-jo.
At the time, the castle was surrounded on three sides by the Lake Biwa, with the mountains around it forming the shape. As such, using the water of the lake as transportation, movment inbetween Kyoto and the castle was unhindered. The chief vassals had their lodgings built in the castle to strengthen the defenses.
In the 10th year of Tensho era (1582), Nobunaga died at the Incident of Honnouji, and Azuchi was taken over by Mitsuhide Akechi. However, Mitsuhide lost to Hideyoshi Hashiba, and the castle was set on fire, burning down the castle tower. The child of Nobunaga, Nobukatsu, became the lord of the castle, but it was abandoned afterwards in the 12th year of Tensho era (1584).
