Kiyosu Castle

Kiyosu Castle
(Owari Province/Aichi Prefecture)

Kiyosu-jo was built by the Owari governor Yoshishige Shiba, and after that, became the governmental office. Although the Oda clan was the deputy governor, the governor Yoshimune Shiba was murdered by the deputy, Nobutomo Oda and his vassal, Daizen Sakai. Nobunaga attacked Kiyosu-jo to destroy the Nobutomo and sakai clans, and took over the castle with the help of his uncle, Nobumitsu. Taking this chance, Nobunaga established Kiyosu-jo as his base. In the 10th year of Tensho (1582) Nobunaga dies in the Incident at Honnouji, and Nobunaga's possesions as well as Kiyosujo's succession was discussed in the Kiyosu Meeting. The result was that Owari, Minami Ise and Iga were to be succeeded by the second son, Nobukatsu, and Kiyosu-jo as his residence.
In the 18th year of Tensho era (1590) Nobukatsu refused Hideyoshi's assignment to the Tokai region, and was dismissed from his position. As such, Kiyosu-jo became the property of Hidetsugu Toyotomi. In the 4th year of Bunroku era (1595), Hidetsugu lost his footing, and Masanori Fukushima became the ruler instead. Masanori led the East forces in the Battle of Sekigahara, and was assigned Aki to his ruling territory. Ieyasu's fourth son Tadayoshi took over, but quickly died, leaving the ninth son Yoshinao Tokugawa to take over.
In the 15th year of Keicho era (1610), the construction of Nagoya-jo started, and the shift was made from Kiyosu-jo to Nagoya-jo. After this, Kiyosu-jo became abandoned.
