Nagoya Castle

Nagoya Castle
(Owari Province/Aichi Prefecture)

One of the three most famous castles of Japan. Most of architectures of the castle inluding its large and small castle towers and the Honmaru Goten were burnt down and lost by the air raid during the Pacific War, but the castle tower was restored only on its outward apperance in 1957.
There was a caslte called Nagoya-jo (那古野城) under the control of the Oda clan at the place where the current Nagoya-jo (名古屋城) stands, but was abandoned when Nobunaga Oda became the ruler.
After that, in the 15th year of Keicho era (1610), Ieyasu Tokugawa called out daimyos in the west Japan and started the construction and finished in the 17th year of Keicho (1612). It became the residence castle for Yoshinao, the 9th son of Ieyasu and prospered as the residence castle of Owari han through the Edo period.
