Marugame Castle

Marugame Castle
(Sanuki Province/Kagawa Prefecture)

Marugame-jo was built during Onin era (1467-8) by the Nara clan who ruled there. The Nara clan based on Shotsuuji-jo and Marugame-jo attained the role of its branch castle.
The Ikoma clan was transfered to Sanuki Province in the 2nd year of Keicho (1597) and modified the castle. As the Ikoma clan based on Takamatsu-jo, the castle was abandoned by the "one castle per country" ordinance issued in the 1st year of Genna era (1615). But, it is said the castle was not actually destroyed.
Ieharu Yamazaki was appointed as the master of Marugame Han to replace the Ikoma clan in the 18th year of Kan'ei era (1641) and started reparing the castle, which lasted for almost 30 years. The currently existing castle tower and the high dry stone were constructed then. In the 1st year of Manji era (1658), Takakazu Kyogoku was appointed as the master to replace the Yamazaki clan and his clan ruled there until the late Tokugawa shogunate after that.
The castle is built on a hill in the flat ground and dry stones are arranged around the hill. It is a grand sight to look up at the towering dry stone from the foot. The height is No.1 in Japan.
