Iwakuni Castle

Iwakuni Castle
(Suou Province/Yamaguchi Prefecture)

Iwakuni-jo was built when Hiroie Kikkawa, vassal of the Mouri Clan, was assigned to this place after the Mouri Clan were defeated in the Sekigahara war and its territory was greatly reduced to Suou and Nagato only. Because it is situated at the border of Bingo and it is also a rare case of a castle built on mountains after the Sekigahara battle, it is thought to have been built in preparation for aggression from the east.
The castle tower's construction started in the 8th year of Keicho era (1603) and finished in the 13th year (1608). However, in the 1st year of Genna era (1615) the castle was demolished in compliance of the one-country-one-castle law. The current castle tower was a restoration that was completed in the 36th year of Showa era (1961), and is built in a location different from the original.
