Nijo Castle (Yamashiro Province/Kyoto Prefecture)
Current Nijo-jo was designed by Ieyasu Tokugawa as a lodging facility for Shogun when he stays in Kyoto and the construction was started in the 8th year of Keicho era (1603) and finished in the 3rd year of Kan'ei era (1626). It used to have a castle tower, but it was burnt down and lost due to a thunderbolt in 1750 and has never been restored since then. Before Ieyasu, Nijo-jo was built three times. First one was the residence castle for the 13th Shogun Yoshiteru Ashikaga and the second one was for the 15th Shogun Yoshiaki Ashikaga, but both of them were burnt down and destroyed by war disturbances in their times. The third one was built by Nobunaga Oda and presented to the Crown Prince. Nobunaga's first son, Tadanobu, was besieged in this castle when the Incident at Honnoh-ji broke out and died in the battle with Mitsuhide Akechi's troops, and this castle was burnt and lost once again. The Ninomaru Goten (palace) has been designated as a National Treasure and other precious architectures such as Sumi turret, Otemon and Honmaru Goten also remain today. Moreover, the castle is also desginate as a World Heritage Site.
