Hiroshima Castle

Hiroshima Castle
(Aki Province/Hiroshima Prefecture)

Built in the delta at the mouth of Ohta river and its alias is Ri-jo (Carp Castle). The construction was started in the 17th year of Tensho era (1589) by Terumoto Mohri and finished in the 19th year of Tensho. The Mohri family based on a mountain castle, Yoshidakohriyama-jo and move their base to the one on the flat ground as the times changed.
Masanori Fukushima became the castle ruler after the Mohri clan was defeated in the Battle of Sekigahara and their territories were reduced. Masanori modified the castle without notice to the shogunate although the Buke Shohatto (Various Points of Laws for Warrior Houses) had been officially announced and he was dismissed from his position. After the Fukushima clan, Naga'akira Asano became the castle ruler and his clan held the post of the Han master until the late Tokugawa shogunate.
Several architectures including the castle tower remained after Meiji Restoration, but all of them were lost by atomic bombing. The current castle tower was restored in the 33rd year of Showa (1958) as well as others including the group of turrets at the outer citadel (Ninomaru).
