Tokushima Castle
(Awa Province／Tokushima Prefecture)

Tokushima-jo was built by Iemasa Hachisuka who was assigned to the Awa Province in the 13th year of Tensho era (1585). The Hachisuka family possessed and governed both Awa and Awaji in the Edo Tokugawa period and ruled those provinces until the late Tokugawa Shogunate.
The castle was built on a mound and at its foot at the crossing point of the Suketou and Terakawa rivers with its east side surrounded by a canal. The castle tower was built on the mound and front palace(Omote Goten) and back palace (Ura Goten) at its foot. The castle site is currently arranged as a park. Terashima river, which used to stream by the side of the castle, was reclaimed and JR's railroad track is laid there.
