Bicchuu Matsuyama Castle
(Bicchuu Province／Okayama Prefecture)

The origin of this castle was the fortress built by Shigenobu Akiba in the 2nd year of En'oh era (1240). During Genko era (1331-34), Muneyasu Takahashi of the Miyoshi clan entered the castle.
In the 4th year of Eiroku era (1561), Iechika Mimura, a Sengoku daimyo in Bicchu Province, who was supported by the Mohri clan invaded and placed the castle under his control. In due time, the Mohri clan allied with the Ukita clan who opposed the Mimura clan and allied with the Oda clan. Due to this, the Mohri clan attacked the Mimura clan and his Bicchu Matsuyma-jo fell to the Mohri clan.
The Mohri clan was defeated in the Battle of Sekigahara and Masatsugu Kobori entered the castle as the representative ruler. Bicchu Matsuyama-jo was a mountain castle and as it was inconvenient for his daily services, he built a residence at the foot of the mountain seperately.
This is one of 12 castles in Japan whose castle tower still remains intact today. It also has turret and earthwork fortification.
