Oka Castle
(Bungo Province／Oita Prefecture)

Oka-jo is a castle built on a mountain pincered by the Inaba and Shirataki rivers, along which are cliffs. The castle was built in the 1st year of Bunji era (1185), and the builder was said to be the local aristocrat Koreyoshi Ogata. Thereafter, Bungo's governor Ootomo's subordinate Shiga clan became the ruler, and defended successfully against Satsuma's Shimazu forces in the 14th year of Tensho era (1586).
In 1594, Ootomo lost his footing, and Hideshige Nakagawa was assigned to the castle instead, building it into the stonewalled castle today. In the 3rd year of Kanbun era (1662), the Nishinomaru Goten was finished, as it can be seen today. Impressive stonewalls can still be seen nowadays, especially the Sanno-Maru stone walls built on the overwhelmingly inaccessible cliffs.
