Kokura Castle
(Buzen Province／Fukuoka Prefecture)

Kokura-jo was first built after Hideyoshi Toyotomi's Kyushu conquest in the 15th year of Tensho era (1587), when Katsunobu Mohri became the ruler. It was constructed at the mouth of the Murasaki River, and was an important spot to maintain power over the Kanmon Straits.
After the battle of Sekigahara, Buzennokuni's Tadaoki Hosokawa was assigned to Kokura-jo and he expanded the castle. In 15th year of Keicho era (1610) the castle tower was finished with a proud sight to behold, but burnt down in the 8th year of Tenpo era (1837).
In the 34th year of Showa era (1959) it was restored with steel-lined concrete, but the restored castle tower had a different appearance compared to the previous one. Currently, the castle is surrounded by an urban environment, and the castle tower acts as a symbol of the city.
