Nakatsu Castle

Nakatsu Castle
(Buzen Province/Oita Prefecture)

Nakatsu-jo was built when Yoshitaka Kuroda was assigned to Buzennokuni in the 15th year of Tensho era (1587). It was a sea castle that faced the Suo sea at its north.
In the 5th year of Keicho era (1600), the Kuroda clan was transfered to Chikuzen Province and Tadaoki Hosokawa became the castle ruler instead. Tadaoki first based on Nakatsu-jo and assigned his younger brother, Okimoto, to Kokura-jo, but moved his residence to Kokura-jo in the 7th year of Keicho era (1602) and Nakatsu-jo became a branch castle. Nakatsu-jo survived as an exception after the "one castle per country" ordinance was issued.
In the 6th year of Genna (1620), Tadaoki handed over his family estate to Tadatoshi and retired to Nakatsu-jo.
