Fukuoka Castle (Chikuzen Province/Fukuoka Prefecture)
Fukuoka-jo was built over the period of seven years by Nagamasa Kuroda who was assigned to Chikuzennokuni in the 5th year of Keicho era (1600) after the Battle of Sekigahara. This place was originally called Fukusaki, but renamed as Fukuoka after Nagamasa's home country Bizen Fukuoka. Nagamasa first based on Najima-jo as his residence, but built Fukuoka-jo as he felt the need of a larger castle. The castle site faces the Genkai Sea at its north and its easten side was adjacent to Hakata, a town of merhants. It is now arranged as Maizuru Park and the magnificent dry stone, turret and the castle gate remain today.
