Shibata Castle (Echigo Province/Niigata Prefecture)
The Shibata land was occupied for generations by the Shibata clan. At the end of the Sengoku period, the ruler, Shigeie Shibata, rebelled against the Echigo lord, Kagekatsu Uesugi, and died in defeat after several years of conflict. The Shibata province came under direct control of the Uesugi clan after that. In no time at all, the Uesugi clan was shifted to Aizu instead, and in their place Hidekatsu Mizoguchi was assigned the Echigo Kanbara country, and expanded the Shibata-jo. The Mizoguchi clan remained there until the late Tokugawa Shogunate. During the Meiji Restoration the castle was abandoned, and has become a base for the self defense force. The main gates (Omotemon) are still intact, as well as the outer citadel corner turret and the inner citadel.
