Ichijodai Castle (Echizen Province/Fukui Prefecture)
The remains of a stronghold of Asakura clan, who ruled over Echizen Province. It was built on land that opened out into the Ichijoudani river, and shelter castles were also built in the neighbouring mountains. According to some, because many people ran away to Ichijoudani when Kyoto was sacked by the Onin war, Kyoto's culture developed there as a result. During the 10th year of Eiroku era (1567), Shogun Yoshiaki Ashikaga left for Ichijoudani, depending on the Asakura clan (he also left for Mino the next year, depending on Nobunaga Oda). After that, the Asakura clan was destroyed by Nobunaga, and Nagatoshi Katsurada who ruled over Echizen and replaced them was also killed during a riot. After the riot was silenced, Nobunaga's vassal Katsuie Shibata, ruler of Echizen, moved to Fukui Kitanosho, Ichijoudani was abandoned. In recent years excavation activities have continued, and restorations to the gardens and housing are being performed.
