Akashi Castle (Harima Province/Hyogo Prefecture)
The Akashi-jo was built by Tadazane Ogasawara in the 3rd year of Genna era (1617). Tadazane was reassigned to Harima Funage from Matsumoto and built the Akashi castle as the Funage castle was too small. Turrets were built on the four corners of Honmaru, but there was no castle tower. Ogasawara clan was reassigned to Kokura in the 9th year of Kan'ei era (1632), and after that, various clans such as Toda, Ohkubo, Fujii, Honda and Matsudaira became the regents of the castle. It became abandoned later by the Meiji Restoration, but the Hitsujisaru and Tatsumi turrents still exists even today. The turrets were damaged in the Great Hanshin earthquake (1995), but they are now restored to their former glory.
