Ako Castle

Ako Castle
(Harima Province/Hyogo Prefecture)

The Akou-jo was built by Naganao Asano in the 1st year of Kanbun era (1661), and under the rare circumstances that it was built after the Warring States period. Soko Yamaga, a famous military science scholar in those days, gave his advice when the castle was designed.
As the castle was built by the sea, there is also a gate that allows ships to dock directly inside. The inside of the castle was fitted with Tap water to receive water from the river, and is one of three largest Japanese Tap water systems.
During the 14th year of Genroku era (1701), Naganori Asano (also known as Asano Takuminokami) wounded Yoshihisa Kouzukenosuke Kira in the Edo castle, and was sentenced to cutting his stomach and his han (adminstrative division) was dismissed. After that came the famous story of the Akou vendetta; 47 Samurai of Akou killed Kouzukenosuke Kira.
