Hitoyoshi Castle
(Higo Province／Kumamoto Prefecture)

Built at the crossing point of Kuma and Mune rivers that stream in a basin, taking advantage of those rivers as natural moats.
In the Kamakura period 9th year of Kenkyu era (1198), Nagayori Sagara entered the castle and the Sagara clan based there to rule the Kuma region. The Sagara clan grew bigger as a Sengoku daimyo during the Sengoku period and lasted as a daimyo that ruled the Kuma region until the late Tokugawa shogunate.
Hitoyoshi-jo was originally a mountain castle and the current form of this castle with dry stone structures was finished in the 16th year of Kan'ei era (1639) with the construction starting in the 2nd year of Keicho era (1597), having arranged Honmaru, Ninomaru and Sannomaru on the mountain at its back and the rampart on the flat ground at the foot.
The dry stone partly has the ceiling plate called "Musha Gaeshi" at its top.
