Kumamoto Castle (Higo Province/Kumamoto Prefecture)
Kumamoto-jo is one of the three most famous castles of Japan. Originally, the land was occupied by the Chiba-jo built by the Higonokuni's governor, the Kikuchi clan, but it was replaced by Kanokogi's Kumamoto-jo (spelled in different Kanji from the current one). The current Kumamoto-jo was built by Kiyomasa Kato in around the 6th year of Keicho era (1601), finishing in the 12th year (1607). The stonewalls arched backwards more steeply as they climbed higher, and were called Mushagaeshi. In the 10th year of Meiji era (1877), during the Seinan war and Satsuma rebellion, the castle tower amongst others were burned down, but withstood the attacks of the Satsuma troops, proving its fortitude as a castle. The Uto turret of 13 other buildings remains today, along the castle towers of various sizes and inner citadel that were restored in this castle of many sights.
