Kasama Castle (Hitachi Province/Ibaraki Prefecture)
It is said that Utsunomiya-jo's roots date back to the Heian period, when the Utsunomiya clan ruled the castle. Through the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, and then in Sengoku period, the Utsunomiya clan greatly expanded their territories and ruled the castle as a Sengoku Daimyo. After defending against the Sagami Hojo clan, the Utsunomiya clan was rewarded for participating in attacking Sagami Hojo, but were suddenly stripped of their castle by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. After that came Gamou/Okudaira clan, Masazumi Honda as the ruler, but thereafter stripped again for the suspicion of assassinating Hidetada Tokugawa (Suspended Ceiling Incident at Utsunomiya-jo). During the Boshin war in the late Tokugawa Shogunate, the castle became the stage of many fierce battles. It is now fitted as a castle park, and the fields and turrets are restored.
