Mito Castle

Mito Castle
(Hitachi Province/Ibaraki Prefecture)

Mito-jo is known as the castle of the Tokugawa Gosanke (three prominent Tokugawa families). It was originally a residence castle for the Baba clan and then the Edo clan. At the time of Hideyoshi Toyotomi's Kanto conquest, the Edo clan allied with the Hojo clan. So, he was dismissed after the war and the Satake clan, a Sengoku daimyo in Hitachi, became the castle ruler and repaired the castle.
The Satake clan was transfered to Dewa Province after the Battle of Sekigahara and Nobuyoshi Takeda, the 5th son of Ieyasu, replaced his position and then came Yorinobu, the 10th son, and Yorifusa, the 11th son after that. This Yorifusa became the father of the Mito Tokugawa family and his descendatns held the post of the ruler of Mito-jo until the late Tokugawa shogunate. Mitsukuni Tokugawa widely known as "Mito Kohmon" was the 3rd son of Yorifusa and the second master of Mito Han.
