Hirado Castle
(Hizen Province／Nagasaki Prefecture)

Hirato-jo was first called Hinotake-jo. The origin was the one built in the 4th year of Keicho era (1599) by the 26th master of the Matsura clan, Shigenobu (Hoin) who governed Hirado region. Hinotake-jo was burn down by Shigenobu himself in the 18th year of Keicho (1613). It is said this was done to show his obedience to the Tokugawa shogunate. After this, the Matsura clan became a daimyo without a castle.
From that time on, the 29th master of the Matsura clan, Shigenobu (Tensho) started designing a castle together with Soko Yamaga. The 30th master, Takashi received an approval to build a castle from the shogunate and completed its construction in the 3rd year of Kyoho era (1718), which is Hirado-jo that remains today.
The current castle tower is the one restored in the 37th year of Showa (1962) and some other buildings are also restored.
