Saga Castle
(Hizen Province／Saga Prefecture)

Saga-jo was the castle of residence for the Saga Han and the Nabeshima clan was the ruler through the Edo period.
This land was originally the main base for the Muranaka-jo, occupied by the Sengoku Daimyo Ryuzoji clan, but the retainer for the Ryuzoji clan, Nabeshima clan, eventually held the real power, and during the Edo period expanded the castle into the Saga-jo.
Saga-jo was able to stop the nearby rivers and waterways during times of distress, and submerge all but the castle tower and inner citadel (Honmaru), lending it its other name, the sinking castle. The current castle has a restored inner citadel (Honmaru Goten), the Shachinomon and Tsuzuki turret.
