Tsuwano Castle

Tsuwano Castle
(Iwami Province/Shimane Prefecture)

The origin of Tsuwano-jo was built in the 3rd year of Einin era (1295) by Yoriyuki Yoshimi who was appointed as a land steward (Jito) of this place by the Kamagura shogunate.
The Yoshimi clan remained the castle ruler by the Muromachi period and had to leave Tsuwano as they were dismissed, since they were under control of the Mohri clan and allied with the western forces during the Battle of Sekigahara.
Ieyasu appointed Naomori Sakazaki as the new catle ruler and Naomori modernized the castle by rebuilding it. He also built a castle tower, but it was burnt down by a thunderbolt in the 3rd year of Jokyo era (1686). The Kamei clan came after the Sakazaki clan and kept the post until the Meiji Restoration.
The dry stone of those days still remains today on top of the mountain and boasts of its beauty.
