Imabari Castle

Imabari Castle
(Iyo Province／Ehime Prefecture)

Imabari-jo was built by Takatora Todo who governed Uwajima, Iyo and Imabari. The construction started in the 7th year of Keicho era (1600), and was finished after 9 years. Takatora was reassigned to Ueno/Isenotsu in Iga in the 13th year of Keicho era (1606), and Takayoshi of the same family became the lord of the castle. Takayoshi moved to Nabari, Iga in 1635, and Sadafusa Matsudaira was assigned as the new ruler. After that, the Matsudaira clan ruled it until the end of the Tokugawa period.
The castle faced the sea, and was built on the flat ground with sea transportation in mind. As the basic design is linear, while there were many castles built later in Osaka, most of them resembled this one. This is because Takatora Todo was a famous castle builder, and under Ieyasu Tokugawa's orders, had them based on the Imabari model.
There was a castle tower during construction, but when Takatora moved the construction of the castle to Tanba Kameyama, it was removed.
