Yamanaka Castle
(Izu Province／Shizuoka Prefecture)

Yamanaka-jo was built by the Late Hojo clan who was based on Odawara-jo in Sagami Province. It is said the castle was built during Eiroku era (1558-1569). The castle was built in a form to control the Tokaido road and took the role to protect Odawara from enemies assaulting from the west.
The Hojo clan opposed to Hideyoshi Toyotomi and expanded the castle to prepare for his invasion in the 17th year of Tensho era (1589). Hideyoshi's forces came to attack in the next year and the castle fell into Hideyoshi's hand in a half day, although Yasunaga Matsuda and Yasutoshi Mamiya who were entrusted for its defense fought a desperate fight.
The castle site is currently cleanly arranged and the remains such as ridged moats (Unebori) created with the Hojo clan's unique construction technique can be seen.
