Kofu Castle (Kai Province/Yamanashi Prefecture)
Koufu-jo's construction is said to have been started by Hideyoshi Toyotomi's nephew, Hidekatsu, in the 18th year of Tensho era (1590). In no time at all Hidekatsu was shifted to Gifu, and in his place came Kai's territorial lord Mitsuyasu Kato, and after that Nagamasa Asano and Yoshinaga, who continued the construction and finished it within the Asano clan's era. After the Battle of Sekigahara in the 6th year of Keicho era (1601), Chikayoshi Hiraiwa became the ruler, and in 1603 Yoshinao Tokugawa (Ieyasu's 9th son) became the ruler. The Tokugawa family continued their reign as rulers until the 2nd year of Hoei era (1705), when father and son Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa and Yoshisato were assigned rulers. The Yanagisawa clan was shifted to Yamato Kooriyama, and Koufu-jo came under the shongunate's direct rule. It was abandoned during the Meiji Restoration.
