Wakayama Castle (Kii Province/Wakayama Prefecture)
Wakayama-jo was built in the 13th year of Tensho era (1585) by Hidenaga, a younger brother of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who ruled Kii Province. After that the Kuwayama clan became the castle ruler and then Yukinaga Asano came after the Battle of Sekigahara and expanded the castle. The Asano family was transfered to Hiroshima in the 5th year of Genna era (1619) and Yorinobu, the 10th son of Ieyasu, came from Sunpu-jo and became the castle ruler instead. This is the beginning of Kishu Han, one of the three prominent Tokugawa families (Tokugawa Gosanke). The castle was abandoned by Meiji Restoration and the castle tower was burnt down by the air raid during the Pacific War. The current casle tower was restored in the 33rd year of Showa (1958).
