Nagashino Castle
(Mikawa Province／Aichi Prefecture)
Nagashino-jo was built at the crossing point of the Kansa and Ure rivers. The areas that face both rivers are cliffs. It is said the castle was built in the 5th year of Eisho era (1508) by Motonari Suganuma, a retainer of the Imagawa clan.
The Suganuma clan were obedient to Ieyasu Tokugawa after Yoshimoto Imagawa died. They surrendered upon invasion by the Takeda clan in the 2nd year of Genki era (1571) and were placed under the control of the Takeda clan. In the 1st year of Tensho era (1573), Ieyasu Tokugawa recovered the castle and his retainer, the Okudaira clan, became the castle ruler.
The castle was besieged in the 3rd year of Tensho era (1575) by the Takeda clan, but the allied forces of Tokugawa and Oda headed for Nagashino-jo to rescue at the news of this crisis while Sadamasa managed to defend the castle. This is the Battle of Nagashino. The power of the Takeda clan who was defeated in this war declined and then ruined. The Okudaira clan abandoned Nagashino-jo in the next year, the 4th year of Tensho era (1576) and moved to a castle newly built in Shinshiro.
