Okazaki Castle (Mikawa Province/Aichi Prefecture)
Okazaki-jo is also called Tatsuki, and is a castle built on the flat lands along Sugou River (currently called Otogawa River). In the middle of the 15th century, Yoritsugu Saigo began its construction, after which Ieyasu Tokugawa's grandfather Kiyoyasu Matsudaira defeated the Saigo clan and conquered the city, renovating it. Ieyasu was born in this castle in the 11th year of Tenmon era (1542). The Matsudaira clan used the castle as their base thereafter, hiding in the Imagawa clan's shadow to survive. However, with Yoshimoto Imagawa's death in Okehazama, they declared independency and conquered the Mikawa countries. Ieyasu shifted to Hamamatsu, and the eldest son Nobuyasu became the ruler of Okazaki-jo. After Nobuyasu's suicide. Ieyasu's vassal Kazumasa Ishikawa and Shigetsugu Honda became the rulers. After Ieyasu shifted to Kanto, Yoshimasa Tanaka came in, and after the battle of Sekigahara Yasushige Honda took over. The castle went on to change hands between famous generals until the end of the Edo period.
