Hachigata Castle (Musashi Province/Saitama Prefecture)
This is a castle situated at the strategic point of the Chichibu mountains in between Arakawa and Fukazawa rivers. It is also the most important location to defend the Kamakura road and Chichibu traffic. Hachigata-jo is said to be built during the 8th Bunmei year (1476) by the Yamanouchi Uesugi vassal, Kageharu Nagao, when he rebeled. After that, Kageharu was defeated by Ougiyatsu Uesugi's vassal, Oota Dokan, and placed under the rule of Yamanouchi Uesugi. In the 15th year of Tenbun (1546), Hojo Ujiyasu won the Kawagoe battle, and as the local aristocrat Amagamiyama-jo's ruler Yasukuni Fujita was in league with Hojo, Ujiyasu's son Ujinori was welcomed in. Ujiyasu named Ujinori the ruler of Hachigata-jo, as well as North Musashi and Kouzuke provinces. Hachigata-jo was expanded by Ujinori into what can be seen today. During the 18th year of the Tensho era (1590), Hideyoshi Toyotomi's Hojo invasion begun, and Toshiie Maeda and Kagekatsu Uesugi forces surrounded the castle. In a month, Ujinori surrendered under the condition that the soldiers were to be unharmed.
