Hachioji Castle (Musashi Province/Tokyo Metropolis)
Hachiouji-jo was built by the Hojo clan who ruled the Kanto region in the late Sengoku period. The ruler was Hojo Ujiteru (younger brother of the 4th Hojo lord, Ujimasa), moving from Takiyama-jo to the much stronger Hachiouji-jo which played the role to defend the border between Musahi and the neighboring Kai Province in the west. He takes care of the political affairs at the lord's office at the foot of the mountain normally, but if a battle was to break out, a retreat could be made to the mountain castle and defended. During the 18th year of Tensho (1590), Hideyoshi Toyotomi's Kanto invasion started, and Hachiouji-jo was surrounded by Toshiie Maeda and Kagekatsu Uesugi forces. Ujiteru was in Odawarajo at that time, and Hachiouji-jo lacked a ruler. His vassals defended the castle in his absence, but eventually fell to the invaders.
