Sendai Castle (Mutsu(Rikuzen) Province/Miyagi Prefecture)
Sendai-jo is built on Aoba mound and protected by a river and a glen. Buit by Masamune Date, the master of Sendai Han who allied with the eastern forces in the Battle of Sekigahara and received an approval of building a castle from Ieyasu after the war. The construction started in the 5th year of Keicho era (1600) and finished in the 7th year of the same era (1602). Masamune moved to this castle from Iwadeyama-jo. It is said the castle had only the core region (Honmaru) when it was built. A tatami room was built on top of the scaffold like the one of the Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto over the cliff where the inner citadel (Honmaru) is located. The castle site was expanded later with the Ninomaru and the Sannomaru built additionally and formed the current scale. All the architectures were totally lost by the earthquake druing the Edo period, the Meiji Restoration and the air raid during the Pacific War. However, the solidity of the castle those days can be estimated with the dry stones which remain all over the site.
