Aizu Wakamatsu Castle
(Mutsu(Iwashiro) Province／Fukushima Prefecture)

The beginnings of the Aizuwakamatsu-jo is placed in the Northern and Southern Courts period, when Ashina clan built the Kurokawa castle. Ashina clan was defeated by Masamune Date in the 17th year of Tensho era (1589), and the Kurokawa castle was then under control of Masamune.
The next year Hideyoshi Toyotomi assigned Ujisato Gamou to govern this province. Ujisato extended the castle by building a castle tower consisting of seven levels and renamed that place Wakamatsu. At this time, the castle was renamed Tsuruga and is still used today. After Gamou clan came Kagekatsu Uesugi, and after the battle of Sekigahara Gamou clan would return to its duties, and Kato clan and Matsudaira (Hoshina) clan became the lord of the castle. In 1611during Kato clan's reign, a huge earthquake collapsed the castle tower, and was rebuilt to five levels. The north and west fortresses were also expanded into today's castle.
During the Boshin war, the Aizu feudal clan stood by the old Shogunate government, and surrendered after suffering a month of the new government troops in the castle.
