Nanao Castle
(Noto Province／Ishikawa Prefecture)

The castle used to be a stronghold of the Hatakeyam clan, a daimyo of Nontonokuni and was expanded over time during the Sengoku period and became one of the biggest mountain castles in Japan.
The Hatakeyama clan was thrown into confusion such as their retainers opposed each other and they were attacked by Kenshin Uesugi of Echigo Province in the 5th year of Tensho era (1577). They endured for a long time, relying on the solidity of their castle, but Nanao-jo fell down because a traitor appeared and was possessed by Kenshin Uesugi.
In the 9th year of Tensho era (1581), Nobunaga Oda extended his power over this area and his subordinate, Toshiie Maeda, entered Notonokuni. Toshiie newly built Komaruyama-jo and abandoned Nanao-jo.
