Osaka Castle (Settsu Province/Osaka Prefecture)
The site of Osaka-jo was originally Ishiyama Honganji built in the 5th year of Meiou era (1496). Honganji was allied with the Mouri clan during the Sengoku period, and fought against Nobunaga Oda. Ishiyama Honganji was formed into a fort and managed to hold out against sieges for a long time, but after a peace treaty was made with Nobunaga, the fort was abandoned. After Nobunaga's death, Hideyoshi Toyotomi built the Osakajo castle. It is said the castle tower built at the same time was covered in gold leaves for luxury. The Osaka-jo existed as a symbol of Toyotomi's political power, and after Hideyoshi's death, his successor Hideyori took over. However, the 9th year of Keicho era (1614) and the year after, Toyotomi forces were attacked by the Tokugawa army, eventually perishing along with the castle. After that, Osaka-jo was rebuilt and finished in the 6th year of Kan'ei era (1629). The design of Osaka-jo seen now is a remnant of this. The castle tower was rebuilt as well, but burned up by a lightning strike. After the Meiji restoration, the castle was abandoned. The castle tower was restored in the 6th year of Showa era (1931), remaining intact even today.
