Komoro Castle (Shinano Province/Nagano Prefecture)
Komoro-jo was built by Taro Mitsukane Komuro in the 1st year of Yowa era (1181), after which the Oi clan posessed it, and later invaded by Shingen Takeda. At this time, Kansuke Yamamoto and Nobufusa Baba supposedly came up with the design of the castle. After the Takeda clan was destroyed, the castle came under Ieyasu Tokugawa's rule, and Nobushige Yoda and the Sengoku clan came to reign over the castle. The castle's current form was arranged during the Sengoku clan's rule. The Otemon was also built during then, and is one of the National Important Cultural Properties, being restored up until March 2008. Although the castle is usually higher than the streets, Komoro-jo was built lower, leading to its name of "Hole Castle". However, the castle's west side is protected by the Chikuma river's cliff face, securing it tightly.
