Matsumoto Castle (Shinano Province/Nagano Prefecture)
Matsumoto-jo was first called Fukashi-jo and used to be a branch castle of Hayashi-jo, the stronghold of the Ogasawara clan, which later became a base of the Kai Takeda clan who defeated the Ogasawara clan and ruled Shinano Province. The castle became under control of Ieyasu Tokugawa after the Takeda clan ruined and the Ogasawara clan came back as the castle ruler. The castle name was changed to Matsumoto-jo at this time. Kazumasa Ishikawa, a subordinate of Hideyoshi, became the castle ruler after Ieyasu was transfered to Kanto region. It is told Yasunaga, a son of Kazumasa, built its five layer castle tower and the Inui Kotenshu (small castle tower) that remain today. Currently, Kuromon (Black Gate) and Taikomon (Drum Gate) are restored.
