Takato Castle
(Shinano Province/Nagano Prefecture)

Takatoh-jo was under control of the Takatoh clan, who belonged to the Suwa clan during the Sengoku period. Takatoh-jo was ruled by the Takeda clan after Shingen Takeda in Kai Province had the Takatoh clan surrender in the 14th year of Tenmon era (1545) and Nobutomo Akiyama, Katsuyori Takeda and then Nobukado Takeda (a younger brother of Shingen) held the post of the lord of the castle.
The Takeda clan gradually lost its power as time went by and was invaded by Nobunaga Oda in the 10th year of Tensho (1582). Morinobu Nishina, the 5th son of Shingen and the lord of Takatoh-jo, was besieged by Nobunaga's large force and cut his stomach when the castle fell.
The Hoshina clan, ex-retainer of the Takeda clan, who surrendered to the Tokugawa clan, became the castle ruler after the Takeda clan ruined. The Hoshina clan became the master of Takatoh Han in the Edo period and adopted a love-child of the 2nd Shogun Hidetada. This child was Masayuki Hoshina who successively held various important positions of the shogunate as a younger brother of the 3rd Shogun Iemitsu. Masayuki was transfered to Yamagata in due time and the Torii and Naito clans became the master of Takatoh Han toward late Tokugawa shogunate.
